The Patent Medicine Compound Berberine Tablets Work Quite Well for Radiation Enteritis in Cancer Patients

Many cancer patients develop the sequela of radiation enteritis after radiotherapy. Radiation enteritis is lingering and hard to heal, affecting the patient's quality of life. In clinical practice I have found that the patent medicine compound berberine tablets (Fufang Huangliansu Pian) work quite well for radiation enteritis in cancer patients.

The main components of compound berberine tablets are berberine (berberine hydrochloride), aucklandia (Muxiang), evodia (Wuzhuyu), and white peony (Baishao). They have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, ease urgency and stop diarrhea, dispel gas, and stop pain and dysentery. Anyone with chronic diarrhea and loose, unformed stools from enteritis, dysentery, or radiation enteritis may try them; no differentiation of cold or heat is needed.

Radiation enteritis has a long course; if not controlled and allowed to progress, it can also lead to cholecystitis, gastritis, duodenal ulcer, and the like, and the patient's whole digestive tract is liable to collapse. Relying on herbal decoctions means a long course, much medicine, and a heavy physical and economic burden on the patient. The patent medicine compound berberine tablets are convenient to take and inexpensive, making them suitable for long-term use.

Berberine tablets are also sold in pharmacies, but in my experience plain berberine tablets are less effective than the compound tablets; most patients improve markedly after taking compound berberine tablets. However, taking compound berberine tablets for a long time or in large amounts easily causes constipation, so patients needing long-term use should consider reducing the dose. One may also take them for a week, stop for a week, then resume.
