Da Huoluo Wan and Xiao Huoluo Wan: Anticancer and Analgesic Patent Medicines
Da Huoluo Wan and Xiao Huoluo Wan are both classical famous TCM formulas for treating impediment pain, and both have certain anticancer and analgesic effects.
Da Huoluo Wan comes from "Lantai Guifan" by the Qing-dynasty physician Xu Lingtai. It is made into pills from Baihuashe, Wushaoshe, Weilingxian, Liangtoujian, Caowu, Tianma, Quanxie, Heshouwu, Zhi Guiban, Mahuang, Guanzhong, Zhi Gancao, Qianghuo, Guipi, Huoxiang, Wuyao, Huanglian, Shudi, Dahuang, Muxiang, Chenxiang, Xixin, Chishao, Ruxiang, Moyao, Jiangchan, Zhi Tiannanxing, Qingpi, Gusuibu, Baidoukou, Anxixiang, Zhi Heifuzi, Huangqin, Fuling, Xiangfu, Xuanshen, Baizhu, Fangfeng, Gegen, Zhi Hugujing (now replaced by cat bone), Danggui, Xuejie, Zhi Dilong, Xiniu Jiao (now replaced by water buffalo horn), Shexiang, Songzhi, Niuhuang, Piannao, Renshen, and other herbs, then coated with gold foil.
Da Huoluo Wan has the actions of expelling wind and supporting healthy qi, and unblocking the collaterals to stop pain. It is mainly used for wind-stroke paralysis with healthy-qi deficiency and evil excess, spasmodic pain, welling-abscesses with wandering nodules, and traumatic injury presenting with generalized pain. It can also be used in cancer patients who are still relatively robust; Da Huoluo Wan is both analgesic and antitumor. This formula contains many herbs that attack toxins with toxins and reduce swelling and scatter nodulation; when used properly, it stops pain and shrinks tumors.
Da Huoluo Wan is also commonly used for patients with cerebrovascular accidents, rheumatoid arthritis, and angina pectoris of coronary heart disease. Modern pharmacology has confirmed that this formula lowers blood pressure, dilates blood vessels, increases cerebral blood flow, inhibits platelet aggregation, excites skeletal muscle, and has anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects.
The herbs in Da Huoluo Wan are cold and hot together; it is a formula of combined cold and heat, so its indications are broad. Any cancer patient with bone metastasis and pain symptoms may try it.
Xiao Huoluo Wan comes from "Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang" and consists of Chuanwu, Caowu, Tiannanxing, Dilong, Ruxiang and Moyao. This formula expels wind and eliminates dampness, resolves phlegm and unblocks collaterals, and invigorates blood to stop pain. It can be used for rheumatic impediment pain presenting with sinew-vessel pain, numbness and spasms, limited joint flexion and extension, and wandering pain. It can also be used for wind-stroke sequelae presenting with numbness of the hands and feet, heavy painful lower back, and limb pain.
Xiao Huoluo Wan has a strong analgesic effect, but its nature is harsh, warm and drying; it suits robust patients with a coldish constitution. Patients with yin deficiency and effulgent fire will experience relatively strong side effects.
