Danbie Capsule: A Patent Medicine for Activating Blood, Softening Hardness and Dispersing Swelling
Danbie Jiaonang (Danbie Capsule) is a patent medicine developed by contemporary TCM. Its ingredients include Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Biejia (Amydae Carapax), Sanqi (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Baizhu (Atractylodis macrocephalae Rhizoma), Banzhilian (Scutellariae barbatae Herba) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus). It activates blood and resolves stasis, softens hardness and disperses nodules. It is used for uterine fibroids and pelvic inflammatory masses due to qi stagnation and blood stasis, presenting with lower abdominal distending pain, soreness of the lower back and sacrum, profuse vaginal discharge, a bearing-down sensation in the anus, and a dark tongue with spots.
According to the package insert, preclinical pharmacodynamic studies show that this product inhibits estradiol benzoate- and progesterone-induced leiomyoma-like proliferation in guinea pig uterus; lowers serum estradiol and progesterone levels in rats; improves adrenaline-induced mesenteric microcirculation disturbance in rats and high-molecular-weight dextran-induced blood viscosity in rabbits; inhibits the contraction frequency and motility of isolated rat uterine smooth muscle; shortens tail-bleeding time in mice; inhibits xylene-induced mouse ear swelling; inhibits cotton-ball-induced rat granuloma; and inhibits foreign-body-induced rat uterine inflammation.
Judging from its composition, Danbie Capsule mainly uses blood-activating, swelling-dispersing herbs together with hardness-softening, nodule-dispersing herbs. Danshen, Sanqi, Taoren, Sanleng, Ezhu and Danggui are all blood-activating, swelling-dispersing herbs; modern pharmacological research shows such herbs have anticoagulant, antimicrobial, anti-swelling and antitumor effects. Traditional TCM holds that tangible masses are mostly caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, so treatment first emphasizes activating blood and resolving stasis. But these herbs also carry a risk of aggravating bleeding; patients at bleeding risk should use them under pattern differentiation. This product may improve bleeding symptoms or, in some patients, worsen bleeding. If bleeding worsens after taking it, the patient should stop promptly and consult a physician.
The Biejia (turtle shell) in this product softens hardness and disperses nodules; it is a common TCM herb for tangible masses. Historically there was the Biejia Jian Wan (Turtle Shell Decocted Pill), a formula specifically for "malaria mother" (hepatosplenomegaly), and the contemporary Biejia Ruangan Pian (Turtle Shell Liver-Softening Tablet) is also commonly used for hepatosplenomegaly—all built around turtle shell. Modern pharmacology confirms turtle shell has antitumor effects and is especially effective in improving cirrhosis and inhibiting liver tumors.
The Banzhilian (Scutellariae barbatae Herba) in this product clears heat and resolves toxin; it is also a contemporary TCM anticancer herb, and pharmacological experiments show it has antiviral and antitumor effects. Guizhi (cinnamon twig) is an acrid-warm herb that induces sweating to release the exterior and warms and unblocks the meridians. Guizhi is included here for its meridian-warming and vessel-unblocking action; adding it to blood-activating herbs enhances their swelling-dispersing effect. The classical Guizhi Fuling Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill) uses Guizhi, and is also a common remedy for benign and malignant gynecological tumors.
Baizhu is a common TCM herb for vaginal discharge; TCM holds that women's leukorrhea is mostly due to spleen deficiency with damp excess, so spleen-fortifying, damp-draining herbs are needed. Baizhu is the premier spleen-fortifying, damp-draining herb and a common remedy for gynecological disease; it can both stop leukorrhea and prevent miscarriage.
The Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) in this product is a common TCM remedy for low back pain; here it serves as an auxiliary that addresses the symptomatic branch. Because gynecological tumors or inflammation are often accompanied by low back pain, and hardness-softening and blood-activating herbs need time to eliminate the mass, while the low back pain is urgent, Duzhong addresses the branch so that both root and branch are treated.
Although the insert states that Danbie Capsule treats uterine fibroids and pelvic inflammatory masses, in practice many clinical TCM physicians also use it for various tumors including gynecological tumors. Combined with Xiaoyao Wan, Xihuang Wan, Xiaojin Wan and Erzhi Wan, it has adjunctive therapeutic effects on estrogen/progesterone-dependent endometrial tumors, breast tumors, uterine fibroids and ovarian tumors.
It should be noted that, according to TCM theory, this product focuses on dispelling evil and lacks root-securing herbs; weak patients should not use Danbie Capsule alone. Under a physician's guidance it should be combined with root-securing, foundation-firming herbs (such as Renshen Yangrong Wan, Guipi Wan or Buzhong Yiqi Wan) to avoid damaging healthy qi.
