Fuliang Tablets (Fuliang Capsules), a Chinese Patent Medicine for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Fuliang tablets (or Fuliang capsules) are a Chinese patent medicine made from Angelica (Danggui), prepared rehmannia (Shudi), teasel (Xuduan), white peony (Baishao), Atractylodes (Baizhu), carbonized sanguisorba root (Diyu Tan), angelica dahurica (Baizhi), calcined oyster shell (Duan Muli), cuttlefish bone (Haipiaoxiao), gelatin pearls (Ejiao Zhu), and carbonized human hair (Xueyu Tan).

This patent medicine mainly nourishes blood and fortifies the spleen, secures essence and stops vaginal discharge. It addresses menstrual irregularity and leukorrhea due to blood deficiency and spleen weakness, presenting as heavy or prolonged menstruation, uterine bleeding (beng lou), dull lower-abdominal pain after menstruation, dizziness and vertigo, a lusterless complexion, or clear, thin vaginal discharge.

Judging from its composition, Fuliang tablets are a tonifying patent medicine. In the formula, Angelica, prepared rehmannia, white peony, and gelatin pearls are common TCM blood-nourishing herbs; teasel tonifies the kidney; Atractylodes fortifies the spleen; calcined oyster shell and cuttlefish bone astringe and stop discharge; carbonized sanguisorba and carbonized hair stop bleeding; angelica dahurica expels wind and stops pain. Together, the herbs nourish blood and tonify the kidney, fortify the spleen and boost the kidney, and astringe and stop bleeding while relieving pain—addressing both root and branch.

Tonifying formulas suit patients with deficiency patterns; they are not appropriate for excess patterns. Fetid, bloody, sudden heavy uterine bleeding with clots, or premenstrual abdominal pain are mostly excess patterns of blood stasis and accumulated heat-toxin; although such patients also have heavy menses, they should not use Fuliang tablets but should consider Dahuang Zhechong pills or similar. Fuliang tablets may be used together with Erzhi Pills to enhance hemostasis and regulate menstruation.
