Fuyankang Tablets

Fuyankang Pian is a Chinese patent medicine produced by several manufacturers. It is a Class B medical-insurance drug, available with a doctor's prescription at insured hospitals or pharmacies. The tablets are sugar-coated or film-coated; after the coating is removed they appear yellow-brown to brown, with a slightly bitter taste.

Fuyankang Pian contains red peony root (chishao), Glabrae sarsaparilla root (tufuling), vinegar-processed curcuma zedoaria (cu sanleng), toasted chinaberry fruit (chao chuanlianzi), vinegar-processed curcuma erzhu (cu ezhu), vinegar-processed corydalis (cu yanhusuo), toasted gordon euryale seed (chao qianshi), Chinese angelica (danggui), sophora root (kushen), vinegar-processed cyperus (cu xiangfu), Phellodendron bark (huangbai), salvia root (danshen), and Chinese yam (shanyao). According to traditional TCM theory, Fuyankang Pian clears heat and drains dampness, regulates qi and invigorates blood, disperses nodules, and reduces swelling. It is indicated for leukorrhea due to damp-heat pouring downward with toxin and stasis mutual obstruction—profuse, yellow, malodorous discharge, lower abdominal pain, lumbosacral pain, and a bitter mouth with dry throat. Today it is often used for vaginitis and chronic pelvic inflammatory disease presenting with these patterns, and may also serve as an adjunct for gynecological tumors.

In Fuyankang Pian, red peony, Chinese angelica, and salvia activate blood and resolve stasis; vinegar-processed sanleng and ezhu break blood and dissipate concretions; toasted chinaberry and vinegar corydalis invigorate blood and stop pain; vinegar cyperus regulates qi and stops pain; sophora, sarsaparilla, and Phellodendron clear heat and drain dampness—these three all have broad-spectrum antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects; euryale seed and Chinese yam supplement the kidney and stop leukorrhea. Together, the herbs give good relief from gynecological symptoms such as discharge, abdominal pain, backache, and a bitter mouth with dry throat.
