New Pill Formula for COVID Sequelae: Chai Ge Huayu Wan

COVID has now damaged the heart and brain blood vessels of many middle-aged and elderly patients. Based on my recent clinical medication insights, I have provisionally devised a pill formula for those who had pre-existing cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease that worsened after COVID infection, or who had no such disease before but developed it after infection. I am provisionally naming it Chai Ge Huayu Wan (Bupleurum-Pueraria Stasis-Resolving Pills); I will also use it myself to prevent my father's coronary heart disease from worsening.

Chaihu (Bupleurum) 15 g, Gegen (Pueraria) 30 g, Guizhi (cinnamon twig) 15 g, Rougui (cinnamon bark) 15 g, Lujiaoshuang (deer antler cream) 15 g, Danggui (Angelica sinensis) 15 g, Gandihuang (rehmannia) 30 g, Huangqin (Scutellaria) 10 g, Renshen (ginseng) 10 g, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes root) 12 g, Dilong (earthworm) 10 g, Chuanxiong (Sichuan lovage) 10 g, Baizhi (Angelica dahurica) 10 g, Gaoben (Ligusticum) 10 g, Manjingzi (Vitex) 30 g, Xiebai (Allium macrostemon) 10 g, Cangzhu (Atractylodes lancea) 10 g, Houpo (Magnolia bark) 10 g, Chao Zhishi (fried immature bitter orange) 10 g, Baishao (white peony) 15 g, Chishao (red peony) 10 g, Honghua (safflower) 6 g, Shenjincao (Lycopodium) 10 g, Weilingxian (Clematis) 15 g, Dibiechong (Eupolyphaga/ground beetle) 15 g, Huainiuxi (Achyranthes) 15 g, Qianghuo (Notopterygium) 10 g, Duhuo (Angelica pubescens) 10 g, Sigualuo (luffa sponge) 10 g, Duzhong (Eucommia) 10 g, Xuduan (Dipsacus) 10 g, Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) 30 g, Yimucao (motherwort) 30 g, Mugua (Chaenomeles) 15 g, Sangbaipi (mulberry bark) 6 g, Digupi (Lycium bark) 6 g, Mudanpi (Moutan) 6 g, Tanxiang (sandalwood) 3 g, Sharen (cardamom) 3 g, Gancao (licorice) 10 g.
Grind all the above into extremely fine powder and mix with refined honey to form soybean-sized pills; take 30 pills 2–3 times daily after meals. This is the normal adult dose; if the spleen and stomach are weak and cannot tolerate the strength, the dose may be reduced as appropriate. Children basically do not have this problem, so they are not advised to take it.
This formula is built on Chai Ge Jieji Tang, Guizhi Xiebai Gualou Tang, Danshen Yin, and Yanghe Tang, with additions. Its action of warming yang and resolving stasis is fairly strong, so it should not be taken long-term in large amounts, and it should not be converted to a decoction, because the decoction would be too strong for middle-aged and elderly bodies to tolerate.
Medical experts in many countries around the world have now observed that after COVID infection, patients (especially middle-aged and elderly patients) are left with various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Using thrombolytic drugs as early as possible in COVID patients can also markedly improve rescue success. Many of the sequelae after COVID recovery are related to thrombosis, so subsequent treatment should focus on activating blood and resolving stasis, with warming yang as the auxiliary.
My Chai Ge Huayu Wan is precisely a prescription designed on this principle. But because COVID is a new problem and I had no prior experience treating COVID sequelae, this formula has no track record of use. Theoretically it should work, which is why I myself have decided to have a pharmacy process the pills for my elderly family. But I also hope readers will treat this formula cautiously.
If an elderly person after COVID is in good physical condition, has stable blood pressure, and has no chest tightness, shortness of breath, or body pain, he or she should not take this medicine. Getting more sun and more activity is enough to prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. In this epidemic, people who regularly exercised or did physical labor mostly had mild symptoms after infection and basically no sequelae. So we should still value physical exercise and manual labor in daily life.
