New Year Greetings to Readers, Patients, Family, and Friends

Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year of the Dragon. I would like to extend my New Year greetings to the readers, fellow patients, family, and friends who have supported me over the years. I wish you all good health, family harmony, smooth work, and may everything go as you wish in the new year!

A new year always brings many new hopes; guided by hope, we live through one year after another. I often say to my patients and their families: this year, let us work together to get through this year, and next year we will plan how to get through the following one. Starting today, we again welcome a new year and must once more work together to live through it. No matter how many setbacks and pains we have endured in the past, I hope everyone can greet this new year with strength and optimism and live it well.

As a researcher who has long focused on people's physical and mental health, I hope that in the new year I can help some friends struggling against illness and death to improve their quality of life and extend survival. Health is the foundation of everything; I also hope that all friends who are still physically and mentally healthy will, as always, maintain their health and cherish this most precious wealth they possess.

In the new year, I will strive to keep studying and writing every day, continue to delve deeply in the health field, and improve my own level, so as to be worthy of the trust my patients place in me. All these years, I have never dared to indulge myself or slacken off, trying to live by the principle: "a day without work is a day without food." It is only because I know how terrifying human inertia is; once I let inertia defeat me and form the bad habit of laziness, my whole life might come to nothing. I am not a person of great talent, so I can only make up for dullness with diligence. I know that with my endowment, only by taking one small step every day can I accumulate little into much, build deep reserves and release them powerfully, and live up to everyone's trust.

Our duty is to relieve others' physical and mental suffering and to safeguard their lives and health. Such a duty has brought me many joyful experiences in life. When we relieve the suffering of anxious patients, we receive enormous affirmation and comfort from the joy of them and their loved ones. But too many physical and mental illnesses are stubborn and beyond our ability, so there are many times when we can only apologize and express our powerlessness. This is a career that can never be brought to perfection, yet "striving toward the highest good" is the goal we pursue; only by diligent study can we approach that goal infinitely.

After passing forty, I have become increasingly aware that the research I do is important because it can bring well-being to people. So now, while continuing to study and research in depth and systematically, I am also consciously cultivating successors. To cultivate successors who are interested in physical and mental health issues, have firm will and a calm heart, have no sectarian bias, study broadly and thoroughly, and can integrate the various branches of human physical and mental health into one whole—this requires great effort. But no matter how much effort it takes, I will strive to cultivate such successors.

The ancients said that diseases are common, but good doctors are not. Although we humans can fly to the moon and dive to the bottom of the sea to explore, in the cause of health there are still too many unsolved medical problems. But medicine is always advancing, and to make some contribution along the road of medical progress is a supremely good thing, both for others and for oneself. In the new year, I wish to continue walking forward on the road of medical progress together with all my colleagues and peers!
