Qiongyu Gao (Jade Juice Paste): A Root-Strengthening Formula for Advanced Cancer Patients
Qiongyu Gao comes from the Hong Shi Jiyan Fang. The original formula is: Sino-Korean ginseng (Xinluo Renshen) twenty-four liang (750 g), raw rehmannia (Sheng Dihuang) sixteen jin (8 kg), white Poria (Bai Fuling) forty-nine liang (1.5 kg), and white crystallized honey (Baisha Mi) ten jin (5 kg). The Xinluo ginseng is Korean ginseng, produced in the Changbai mountain region, found in Korea and northeast China. White Poria is Fuling, and white crystallized honey is honey. When cancer patients prepare Qiongyu Gao for themselves, I recommend using pagoda-tree flower honey, because pagoda-tree flowers have broad-spectrum anticancer effects.
The preparation method is: first decoct the raw rehmannia to extract its juice; grind the ginseng and Poria together into an extremely fine powder; pour into the rehmannia decoction; add the honey and stir evenly to obtain the paste. The finished Qiongyu Gao should be sealed in a porcelain or glass vessel and stored, usually in the refrigerator. Take 6-9 g each time, twice daily, dissolved in warm boiled water.
This formula nourishes yin and moistens the lung, and boosts qi and fortifies the spleen. It is suitable for patients with yin deficiency and lung dryness and declining spleen qi, presenting as dry cough with little sputum, dry throat with cough and blood, emaciated muscles, shortness of breath and fatigue, poor appetite, a red tongue with little coating, and a thin rapid pulse. It is a root-strengthening formula that improves the quality of life of advanced cancer patients, boosts immunity and prolongs life. In anemic patients it also achieves blood tonification.
Modern pharmacological research finds that Qiongyu Gao not only boosts cancer patients' immunity but also enhances the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapy-induced apoptosis; it raises chemotherapeutic efficacy mainly by inhibiting cancer-cell proliferation and tumor metastasis. It markedly improves the myelosuppression and immunosuppression of chemotherapy and activates immune function.
Qiongyu Gao also slows the progression of liver-cancer tumor cells, and inhibits hepatitis B virus expression, preventing and treating HBV-related liver cancer. If, when preparing Qiongyu Gao, 5-10 kg of turtle shell (Biejia) is decocted together with the raw rehmannia and this decoction is then used to make the paste, the inhibition of liver cancer is even more marked.
In addition, Qiongyu Gao scavenges free radicals, reduces free-radical oxidative damage and delays aging, so it is also a fine anti-aging formula.
Qiongyu Gao also promotes mucus secretion, markedly thickening the surface epithelium of the body-gastric glands in atrophic gastric mucosa, preventing epithelial atrophy and protecting the gastric mucosa. Atrophic gastritis is a precancerous lesion of gastric cancer, so Qiongyu Gao helps prevent gastric cancer. When atrophic-gastritis patients use Qiongyu Gao to prevent gastric cancer, 1.5 kg of dendrobium (Shihu) may be ground together with ginseng and white Poria into powder for the paste.
Qiongyu Gao is also suitable for advanced lung-cancer and nasopharyngeal-cancer patients, especially those with low immunity after prolonged radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy. For lung cancer, 1.5 kg each of Maidong and Tiandong may be added, ground together with ginseng and white Poria and mixed into the rehmannia juice to make the paste.
This formula also suits other cancer patients with lung-yin deficiency and weak spleen; patients may ask their own doctor to adjust the herbs to their condition for greater specificity. This formula also repairs liver damage and can thus serve as a liver-protective medicine.
For long-term medication, a paste is preferable: it is convenient to take and has little irritation to the stomach.
