The Spark of Scientific Research Has Been Ignited

August 24, 2026. I took the high‑speed rail from Beijing to Luoyang, the ancient capital, to hold discussions with the laboratory director of a Grade‑A Tertiary Hospital there about cooperation on animal experiments for lung cancer treatment based on the multi‑target large‑compound prescription approach.


The night before, I had caught a cold. To avoid disrupting this pre‑arranged trip, I adopted an unconventional therapeutic measure. Over roughly one hour, I took nine sachets of Mahuang Decoction granules in succession. Though this was an aggressive dosing regimen, it produced remarkable results: my cold symptoms resolved completely within three hours. That said, I do not recommend others follow this practice, especially those with cardiac conditions.


Ancient medical wisdom cautions against using Ephedra (Mahuang) in spring and summer. Why, then, did I administer Mahuang Decoction in summer? The reason is straightforward: air‑conditioning did not exist in ancient times, so air‑conditioner‑related illnesses were unknown then. My cold stemmed from prolonged exposure to air‑conditioning in the library this summer.


This hospital is the third Grade‑A Tertiary Hospital with which I have reached a letter‑of‑intent for cooperation this summer. Thanks to their ready‑available tumor‑bearing mice, this collaboration can soon move into practical experimental procedures.


I boarded my train in Beijing at seven o’clock in the morning. After concluding our talks, I was back in Beijing by half‑past seven in the evening. Luoyang boasts beautiful scenery and numerous historical relics. Still, I had no time for an extended stay and departed in haste, without taking a single landscape photograph. At present, only my summer vacation is fully my own time, so I must arrange all my work as efficiently as possible.


Previously, animal experiments on cholangiocarcinoma in partnership with a Grade‑A Tertiary Hospital in Shanghai have already commenced, and cooperation with another Grade‑A Tertiary Hospital in Guangdong is also underway. My collaborators are all PhD holders, postdoctoral researchers, or doctoral supervisors. Such partnerships were beyond my imagination in the past. Back in 1998, I missed my first‑choice university admission in the national college entrance examination and lost the opportunity to study clinical medicine. I never imagined I would one day engage in medical research at this level.


Yet over the past eleven years, I have persisted in self‑study and clinical investigation, writing every single day. In total, I have produced more than 5.3 million characters of text. This body of work has drawn attention from many unexpected allies. Most of these medical‑doctor collaborators have followed my work for over five years and read a great many of my writings. Consequently, my in‑person engagements with them have gone far more smoothly than I anticipated.
My wife met me at Beijing West Railway Station upon my return. On our way home, I shared some of my reflections with her. I told her: so long as the desire for fame and gain lingers, genuine academic aspirations can hardly be fulfilled. Now that I am embarking on joint research on this major project, I must set aside the pursuit of fame and profit and maintain an open‑minded attitude so that others will be willing to cooperate with us long‑term.


My wife asked whether I should apply for patents to protect my intellectual property. I recounted the story of Academician Wang Zhenyi, whose case I learned about in my medical‑ethics course, and explained the stance Professor Wang took on patent issues. Precisely because this distinguished hematologist declined to file patents, countless patients gained access to optimal treatment at extremely low cost.


I have watched interview footage of the elderly Academician Wang, receiving oxygen therapy in a hospital ward, stating that he felt deeply content the moment a new therapy solved previously intractable clinical problems. That video moved me profoundly. I thought of my own mother: had there been more physicians like Academician Wang in the world, patients such as her would have suffered far less.


I told my wife that our child possesses fine natural talent and sound character, so we need not worry about his future, nor is there any need to amass excessive wealth. Instead, we ought to uphold the benevolent spirit of the medical profession to advance medical science, and deliver interventions that benefit ordinary patients to the greatest possible extent. Without medical progress, our own family members would remain helpless when faced with serious illness in the future.


My wife endorsed my position on all these points, for which I am most grateful. Without her years‑long support, I could never have sustained my pursuit of medical research amid so many adverse circumstances, nor could I have returned to university at my current age to study clinical medicine.


I hope to promote and materialize my medical concepts through collaborations with PhD researchers from affiliated hospitals of Project‑985 and Project‑211 universities. To realize this goal, I must redouble my efforts and pursue research and partnerships with greater openness of mind. Any novel medical concept will inevitably trigger diverse controversies. I am already grateful and satisfied that high‑caliber medical professionals take interest in my ideas and are willing to explore them alongside me.


Should this research succeed, it will not be my personal achievement, but a collective accomplishment. I will not claim credit for findings generated by other participating researchers in later phases. Moreover, I am eager to foster greater motivation and enthusiasm among young investigators to continue along this research path. Only with their participation can this medical framework hope to flourish.


A decade ago, I could scarcely envision collaborating side‑by‑side with medical experts trained at research institutions and universities including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Sun Yat‑sen University, Southern Medical University, Jinan University, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and Zhengzhou University to tackle one major shared research topic.


Today, however, I believe that as research deepens and my multilingual website goes online, I may even conduct medical explorations alongside researchers worldwide ten years from now. My medical ideas can then spread further and exert influence on a broader scale.


The process of organizing clinical reasoning, refining academic thought, and exchanging perspectives also constitutes tremendous self‑improvement for me. Recently, a pancreatic‑cancer patient treated under my multi‑target large‑compound‑prescription framework for two weeks experienced a precipitous drop in tumor markers, falling from over 1000 to roughly 500, accompanied by marked improvement in subjective well‑being. Such therapeutic outcomes were beyond my reach previously.


I would not have attained such progress without the encouragement of these young colleagues, who urged me to organize my thoughts into written form. This is therefore a journey of mutual growth, for which I owe them gratitude.


At forty‑seven, I am only just gathering momentum for medical research. I can continue my work for at least another twenty years. Over these coming two decades, my priorities will be to further build the theoretical framework for multi‑target large‑compound‑prescription therapy, and expand its application to more disease categories. Together with more medical peers, I will validate and iteratively refine concrete therapeutic strategies guided by this medical concept for diverse refractory diseases via animal experiments and clinical practice.


This tiny spark embodies my hope.
