Three Small Habits Can Cut Cardiovascular Disease Risk by 10%

A new‑conducted British study has found that merely sleeping an extra 11 minutes, doing 4.5 more minutes of moderate‑to‑vigorous exercise, and eating approximately an extra quarter‑cup of vegetables each day can reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events by roughly 10 percent.

Published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the research team analyzed health data from more than 53,000 adults in the UK Biobank and tracked them for about eight years to explore the combined impacts of three lifestyle habits — sleep, physical activity and diet — on cardiovascular health.

The results showed that making minor adjustments to sleep, exercise and diet at the same time was more helpful for lowering the risk of severe cardiovascular diseases including heart attacks, strokes and heart failure, compared with improving only a single habit.

Researchers estimated that the combined effect of three daily changes — getting an average of 11 extra minutes of sleep, adding 4.5 minutes of moderate‑to‑vigorous activity (such as brisk walking, stair‑climbing, cycling or lifting heavy objects), and consuming an extra quarter‑cup of vegetables — could bring down the risk of major cardiovascular events by around 10%.

Researchers involved in the study stated that sleep, exercise and diet are not mutually independent factors in real life but interact with one another. People who get sufficient sleep tend to have more energy for physical activity in the daytime and find it easier to stick to a healthy diet. Regular exercise, in turn, helps improve sleep quality and fosters healthy eating habits.

Accordingly, researchers suggest that instead of setting overly ambitious goals that are hard to sustain, starting with tiny daily changes makes it easier to maintain habits in the long run and gradually accumulate health benefits.

The findings once again demonstrate how critical a healthy lifestyle is for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Several scholars have documented remarkable physical improvements after modifying their lifestyles. For instance, Professor Vaughn M. Bryant, Jr., an anthropologist at Texas A&M University, once recounted his personal experience in a diary.

While carrying out field excavations at an archaeological site in southwest Texas, he reconstructed prehistoric humans’ diets by studying their coprolites. Those diets were predominantly plant‑based and high in crude fiber. Satisfied with the diet pattern, he began eating accordingly. Meanwhile, he drove less, cycled to campus every day, took the stairs instead of elevators, and walked rather than drove or cycled when crossing the campus.

After living this way for some time, he reported, “I feel far better both physically and mentally and more energetic than before.” Without intentional dieting or calorie‑counting over three months, he lost 30 pounds. In the following four years, he never suffered a serious illness or took a single sick day.
