Xinnaojian Capsules: A Patent Medicine Made from Tea Extract

Xinnaojian Jiaonang (or Xinnaojian Pian, Heart-Brain Health) is a patent medicine made from tea extract. The tablets are sugar-coated, appearing brown after coating removal; the capsules contain brown powder, bitter and slightly astringent in taste. Each tablet or capsule contains 0.1g of tea extract (calculated as tea polyphenols). Orally, take 2 tablets or capsules three times daily.

The main action of Xinnaojian Pian (or capsules) is to clear and benefit the head and eyes, rouse the spirit and strengthen the brain, and turbify turbid qi and lower lipids. It is indicated for dizziness and vertigo, chest tightness and shortness of breath, lassitude and fatigue, low spirits, and memory decline. It helps prevent and treat cardiovascular disease with high fibrinogen and atherosclerosis, and leukopenia caused by tumor radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

Tea has very few side effects, and the cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and post-radiotherapy/chemotherapy aftereffects that Xinnaojian targets are common problems; such patients may use Xinnaojian as an adjunct. But not everyone tolerates tea extracts; many people do not tolerate tea. For example, I myself develop a range of discomforts when drinking tea, and people prone to insomnia find it worsens their sleep. Those who do not tolerate tea are not suitable for Xinnaojian capsules or tablets.

If one does not like taking medicine but prefers tea, tea may be used instead; the health benefits of tea have been confirmed by many studies.
