Xuanning Liniment: A Topical Chinese Patent Medicine for Dermatology

"Xuanning Chaji" (Tinea-Clearing Liniment) is a modern topical Chinese patent medicine. Its ingredients include golden larch bark (tujingpi), Phellodendron bark (guanhuangbai), densefruit pittany root bark (baixianpi), cynanchum root (xuchangqing), sophora root (kushen), pomegranate rind (shiliupi), datura flower (yangjinhua), angelonia seeds (nantianxian), broom fruit (difuzi), and camphor (zhangnao). The product is a clear, brownish-red liquid with a distinctive aroma.

Xuanning Chaji clears heat and eliminates dampness, kills parasites, and relieves itching; it has a strong antifungal effect and is commonly used for tinea pedis, tinea manuum, tinea corporis, and tinea cruris. Apply or spray it directly onto the affected area two to three times daily.

Tinea pedis, manuum, corporis, and cruris are generally infectious skin diseases caused by dermatophytes. They are contagious; common signs are lesions such as erythema, blisters, and pustules, with marked itching. Western treatment mostly applies antifungal ointments such as clotrimazole or miconazole (Daknin) topically, together with oral antifungal medication. But tinea is an extremely stubborn skin disease, hard to treat and prone to recurrence.

In Xuanning Chaji, golden larch bark, densefruit pittany bark, and broom fruit are common TCM dermatology herbs and exert targeted killing effects on a variety of skin pathogens; Phellodendron, sophora, and camphor have broad-spectrum antibacterial effects—Phellodendron and sophora clear heat and dry dampness, while camphor clears heat and relieves pain. Cynanchum dispels wind and dampness and also stops pain and itching; pomegranate rind astringes, dries dampness, kills parasites, and stops itching; datura flower relieves spasms and itching; angelonia seeds clear heat, resolve toxins, reduce swelling, and stop pain. Used together, the herbs address both root and manifestation, so the liniment has a definite effect on dermatophytosis.

Tinea is also usually related to the body's immunity; besides topical medication, oral drugs are needed for systemic treatment. Xuanning Chaji may be combined with oral patent medicines such as Xuanding Xuedu Wan or Danggui Kushen Wan. Tinea can cause severe skin damage; in some patients the lesions take a long time to recover and treatment often requires more than two years, so patience is needed.
