"Fujin Shengji San" from the Yizong Jinjian

The Yizong Jinjian (Golden Mirror of the Medical Tradition) contains a prescription named "Fujin Shengji San" (Putrescence-Exhausting, Flesh-Generating Powder). Its composition is: ercha (catechu), ruxiang (olibanum), moyao (myrrh), xuejie (dragon's blood) and hansanqi (dried sanqi / notoginseng), each 3 qian (9 g); bingpian (borneol) 1 qian (3 g); and shexiang (musk) 2 fen (0.6 g). Usage: prepare each herb in this formula into a powder, and sprinkle it on the affected area, twice daily.

This formula has the action of removing putridity and generating flesh. It is indicated for all kinds of welling abscesses, carbuncles and other toxins where the ulceration will not close. If there is deep fluid in the ulcer opening, add duan longgu (calcined dragon bone) 1 qian (3 g). If one wishes to close the wound quickly, one may also add zhenzhu (pearl) 1 liang (30 g), xiehuang (crab roe; take the roe after steaming the crab, dry it in the sun for later use) 2 qian (6 g); or use raw lard (fried and the residue removed) 8 liang (240 g), add hala (yellow beeswax) 1 liang (30 g), melt the lard and beeswax together, then pour in the remaining medicinal powder, stir thoroughly, and allow to cool and solidify into a plaster; apply it to the affected area. If it is caused by traumatic injury, double the dose of hansanqi.
