Xiaoshuan Tongluo Tablets for the Sequelae of Cerebral Thrombosis
"Xiaoshuan Tongluo Pian" (Thrombo-Dissolving and Collateral-Unblocking Tablets) comes from the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, Part I, 2005 edition. Its composition is: Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) 120 g, Danshen (Salvia Root) 90 g, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) 180 g, Zexie (Water Plantain Rhizome) 60 g, Sanqi (Notoginseng) 60 g, Huaihua (Sophora Flower) 30 g, Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 60 g, Yujin (Curcuma Root) 60 g, Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) 30 g, Bingpian (Borneol) 2.4 g, Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit) 60 g.
Preparation: of the 11 herbs, separately grind Bingpian finely and crush Sanqi into a fine powder. Decoct the remaining nine herbs in water three times, combine the decoctions, filter, then concentrate the filtrate into a clear extract with a relative density of 1.35-1.40. Add the Sanqi powder, dry, granulate, and dry again. Add the Bingpian powder, mix evenly, and compress into tablets, coating with sugar or film. Each tablet is equivalent to 1.8 g of crude drug.
Xiaoshuan Tongluo Tablets are made by many manufacturers; patients need not prepare them for their own use. Xiaoshuan Tongluo Pian activates blood and resolves stasis, and warms the channels and unblocks the collaterals. It chiefly treats elevated blood lipids, and the dullness of spirit, stiff tongue, slow and slurred speech, indistinct pronunciation, cold hands and feet, and pain on movement caused by cerebral thrombosis. While taking the medicine, avoid raw, cold, spicy, and animal-fat foods.
The Chuanxiong, Danshen, Sanqi, Yujin, and Shanzha used in Xiaoshuan Tongluo Pian are all blood-activating stasis-resolving substances. Huaihua stops bleeding and lowers blood pressure; Guizhi warms the channels and unblocks the collaterals; Muxiang regulates qi; Zexie promotes urination; Huangqi supplements qi. Used together, they supplement qi and activate blood, warm the channels and unblock the collaterals, and regulate qi and promote urination, with a certain effect on the various sequelae caused by cerebral thrombosis. They may also be used to relieve various symptoms caused by brain tumors.
